liteon 486s cdrom not working
This is a quick fix for a LITEON LTN486s CDROM that doesn’t want to work anymore under Windows XP. Usually when this happens the drive is no longer listed as in “My Computer” and, furthermore, in “Device Manager” the unit appears to be misconfigured or in error (yellow exclamation mark).
Reinstalling/updating the CDROM drivers will not fix this situation, you need to hack into the registry and remove the following keys:
\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\LowerFilters
\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\UpperFilters
These entries are usually courtesy of some burning software and deleting the keys might render that software unusable. Reinstalling the software might save your day!
