NORC: Street View for Romania

Big Brother is here:

Following last fall’s reports about Google Street View cars spotted in Eastern Europe, it seems it’s NORC that’s been pushing the first Street View for Romania (and other places in Eastern Europe).

The images are at a decent resolution and they seem quite well-processed (manually edited to at least blur out vehicle registration plates). Of course, the overall look and feel is not as well polished as Google’s own service but it’s a huge step, considering the big players don’t even have decent road-maps for this area.

Ok, so you buy your stuff on the Internet. And get it delivered to you via a courier service. Or you’re using one for work-related shipments. Or some friend just sent you a package. How do you know where it is and how long it will take until it’s delivered? Well, you go the courier’s site, enter the shipment reference number, or AWB, or whatever… and you see it’s track log. Simple, right?

Not quite… First you have to figure out the courier’s site (that’s generally easy). Then you have to find where is the packing tracking section (yes, there are still big couriers that don’t have it on the first page). But you manage through all this only to find out you have to do it all over again each time you need to check the same package.

No more! Really!!!

DNS hosting

ZoneEdit – free for up to 5 domains and reasonable queries. Useful as a back-up tool but could be used for primary nameservers too. Design does look a bit outdated.

Info and troubleshooting

IntoDNS – web 2.0 design, very user-friendly – generates a full report on your DNS records health. Thumbs up to ElvSoft!
RobTex – very detailed. I like the graphs it generates:

Chrome Benchmark

Vio has taken the time and tried to compare Chrome’s performance to today’s major browsers. He’s been using TaskWriter (Sety‘s latest product) as a benchmark and the results are quite interesting: Chrome is the speediest, but FF3 is very close:

Face Recognition

Google stepped up yesterday with two launches: a web browser (Chrome) and updated versions of PicasaWeb and Picasa 3 picture management software. I won’t comment much on Chrome, except that it seems very fast and wheel-like scrolling up doesn’t work on my laptop’s touchpad… and I miss the dedicated search box (I really do).

But the new PicasaWeb features something really cool: face recognition. It will analyze all your uploaded pictures and find faces, then group them together and ask for you to assign names/persons. This is not new, Riya’s been doing this for some time already, right? Yeah, but my experience with Riya wasn’t the greatest and I found it almost unusable while PicasaWeb simply… just works.

That’s WOW in my dictionary!(...)

Google Translate Does Romanian Too

Seems that Google has updated its Translate service to include many more languages. Among these is also Romanian, and the results are pretty damn hilarious.

Pare că Google a actualizat Traduceţi sale de serviciu, pentru a include mai multe limbi. Printre aceste este, de asemenea, română, şi rezultatele sunt destul de naibii de hilar.

And now backwards:
Se pare ca Google si-a actualizat serviciul Translate (traduceri) pentru a include mai multe limbi. Printre acestea este, de asemenea, romana si rezultatele sunt al naibii de distractive.

It seems that Google had updated service Translate (translation) to include more languages. Among them is, too, Romanian and the results are damn fun.

Now everyone should be able to enjoy Zoso (original).
