Transfagarasan
Written by Vlad on January 10, 2005 – 11:36 amInspired by Claudia&Doug’s recent posts (here, here and here) about Transfagarasan I decided to search through the pictures we took last summer. Here’s some of them (click on the pictures for larger versions):
- nice waterfall, we could see it from a far distance

- the asphalt was good and we loved the turns

- the small blue thingy is a helicopter flying at lower altitude than the road

- another picture of the chopper

- lots of springs and waterfalls

- yes, donkeys, not such an uncommon thing to see on Romanian roads but still we couldn’t stop laughing

- about to enter a cloud, last good pictures taken

- the road had lots of sharp turns

We took almost no pictures at Balea because we were in the middle of a cloud and visibility was down to a couple of meters. We were about to fall in the lake while trying to get to it; luckily we heard the sound of some spring pouring into the lake.
We did take some pictures at Vidraru dam:
- doesn’t seem that a big distance, does it? Well, I tell you it is! BTW: I’m an acrophobic!

- the lake was at it’s highest level I’ve ever seen

Holidays Shopping Frenzy
Written by Vlad on January 7, 2005 – 1:16 pmRecently I received an email with pictures from a Carrefour in Kosice, Slovakia. Apparently they had discounts up to 95% right after Christmas in an attempt to sell out the stock. Here’s the story and bellow are the pictures (click on the sample picture to see all of them)
Gee, and I thought our supermarkets were overcrowded these holidays!
Reminds me of the Media Markt opening in Poland and the devastation that followed (click on sample to view all pictures):
Please do not link to any of the pictures in the galleries!
UPDATE: Moved the galleries over to Flickr!

Dvorak Keyboard Layout
Written by Vlad on January 6, 2005 – 2:39 pmKeyboards, especially those destined to be used with a personal computer, most often come with a QWERTY layout. Which is just fine by me. However, there are people claiming that other layouts will make you more productive. Which brings us to Dvorak layout.
What does it? Well, it basically shuffles around all your keys making it almost impossible for you to write anything.

Why would any sane person do this? The new positioning of keys facilitates faster writing by putting most used keys in most accessible positions. This should result in: faster typing, fewer spelling errors, more comfortable experience.
Can I try it? Sure, knock yourself out. Change you your keyboard layout/mapping to Dvorak and start typing right off. Or, better yet, check out this tutorial: ABCD – A Basic Course In Dvorak
Let me know if it works for you! It did for Matt.
Forgot to mention: No, there is no Romanian Dvorak layout, at least none that I could find. Anybody to change that? I thought so!
